With its easy, natural vocality and rich orchestral palette, the Gloria offers an accessible gateway to discovering or deepening this repertoire of rare beauty and sensitivity.
Composed in 1713, the Gloria in D major RV 589 is a rich work in which Vivaldi synthesizes the musical genres of his time. From the concertante style to the virtuoso aria inherited from Italian opera, from the rigor of the fugue to the majesty of vertical, imposing writing, the Venetian composer offers us a veritable panorama of the state of religious music at the beginning of the 18th century. The Gloria is a work of great unity, yet it is built on the idea of contrasts: minor keys follow on seamlessly from major ones, the most virtuosic and demonstrative arias rub shoulders with moments of intense contemplation, the choral mass responds to the voice of an isolated instrument, a text chanted in a lively rhythm gives way to a phrase built on a few sparse syllables.
These contrasts, reminiscent of the chiaroscuro of 17th-century painters, are typical of the Venetian music of the Baroque Golden Age, of which Vivaldi is one of the greatest exponents.
