Vocal jazz – Swing, harmonies and improv

Rediscover jazz and its core elements – swing, blues, standards, harmonies and improvisation – through the joy of singing. Let’s tune in and have a blast!

Vocal jazz – Swing, harmonies and improv

What is jazz, really? We’ll dive into that question together with some hands-on practice.
Swing isn’t only about listening – it’s a rhythm you feel in your whole body and that can enrich any musical style. So get ready for some toe-tapping, hand-clapping exercises!
Blues, a form of jazz expression, will be our gateway into improvisation. Sometimes, you’ve just got to jump in and sing – there’s no wrong way to do it because nothing’s set in stone! We’ll focus on tuning into different sensations. The aim is to help you gain awareness and confidence as the music flows, so you’ll never feel lost in improvisation again.
We’ll learn classic songs, or standards, where you can try out different roles as a jazz vocalist: singing the melody, providing accompaniment and improvising. This is your chance to bring out those rich jazz harmonies with their vibrant colours and delightful dissonances.
Vocally, we’ll work on relaxing and blending our voices by really listening to each other. Our ultimate goal? To have a great time and transform into a mini vocal big band, ready to perform with style and a smile.

Biography

Delprat

After studying classical music and jazz from a young age, Antoine Delprat trained at the Paris Conservatory in composition techniques and jazz. As a jazz musician, he performs in iconic Parisian clubs like Duc des Lombards and at festivals like Jazz sous les Pommiers. He has also contributed to several albums, working with singer Léa Castro, among others. Antoine arranges music for various vocal jazz projects, including the Bloom trio and the Exeko sextet (formerly Ego System). Passionate about singing and teaching, Antoine works as an accompanist, conductor and arranger. He collaborates with amateur choirs in workshops and on long-term projects, most notably the Jazzalam choir, his musical home for nearly fifteen years.
